## System Overview

This system is a **dedicated TrueNAS storage server**, upgraded from a
10+ year old Xeon-based platform that had remained in continuous service.

The goal of the rebuild was to modernize the platform while preserving
the same design principles that allowed the original system to run
reliably for over a decade.

Like the rest of the lab, this machine is **intentionally single-socket**
to avoid unnecessary NUMA complexity.

## CPU & Platform Notes

The **EPYC 7232P** is an 8-core P-series processor optimized for
single-socket deployments.

While modest in core count, it provides:

- Excellent single-threaded performance
- Full 8-channel memory bandwidth
- Sufficient PCIe connectivity for storage and networking

This makes it a strong fit for a storage-focused system where I/O
consistency and reliability are more important than raw compute density.

## Memory Configuration

- Total installed: **128 GB DDR4-3200**
- Configuration: **8 × 16 GB RDIMMs**
- Topology: One DIMM per channel (1DPC)

This layout maximizes memory bandwidth and ensures stable ARC behavior
under sustained load.

## Storage Layout

### Boot Pool (`boot-pool`)
- ZFS mirror
- SATA SSDs
- Dedicated exclusively to the TrueNAS OS and system datasets

### Main Storage Pool (`tank`)
- ZFS mirrored vdevs
- **4 TB WD Gold** enterprise HDDs
- Balanced for reliability, predictable performance, and easy expansion

No RAIDZ is used; mirrors were selected to simplify resilvering and
reduce rebuild times.

## Networking

- **Intel X520 dual-port 10 Gb SFP+ NIC**
  - Primary storage and backend connectivity
- Onboard 1 Gb interfaces remain available for management and fallback

## Cooling & Power

- Noctua **NF-A12x25 PWM** fans provide consistent front-to-back airflow
- Corsair **HX1200** PSU provides ample power headroom and long-term stability

Acoustics are secondary to thermal predictability and component longevity.

This system reflects a long-term storage philosophy:

- Single-socket simplicity
- Conservative hardware choices

The previous storage server ran for over a decade; this platform was
selected with a similar lifespan in mind.
